How to Fix Curly Hair in the Morning
While curly hair is one of our favourite styles, we understand it may not fit everybody. Some may enjoy straight hair or feel like their curly hair is too hard to tame and maintain during the day. We believe that curly hair is a beautiful and unique hair type, and its natural texture and shape characterize it.
While many people envy those with luscious curls, those with curly hair know it can be challenging to care for and style. Curly hair can be prone to frizz, dryness, and breakage, and finding the right products and techniques that work best for your specific hair type can be difficult.
As such, we are here to suggest some fixes for curly hair in the morning. Remember, every person’s curly hair is unique, so you may need to experiment with different products and techniques to find what works best.
We tried to select tips that do not require a huge time investment, as we know that these fixes often must be done a few minutes before heading out the door for school or work. However, we did add some ideas that take a little bit more time in case you have the time on your hands!
Read on to find out how to tame that mane!
Use water to refresh your curls
One of the most common issues people with curly hair complain about is flat or frizzy curls in the morning. A quick spritz of water is one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to revive your curls. To do this, use a spray bottle filled with water to lightly mist your hair, then scrunch your curls gently with your hands to help reshape them.
Repeat this process until you are satisfied with your hair. Avoid spraying too much water— you do not want to look like you just came out of the shower! Add a small leave-in conditioner or curl refresher to the water for extra moisture and definition.
Use a curl-defining product
This is a relatively straightforward suggestion: to help keep your curls looking defined and frizz-free, apply a curl-defining product to your hair after you’ve refreshed it with water. There are many curl-defining products to choose from, so fret not! Look into mousses, gels, creams, and serums until you find one right for you and your hair.
Look for products specifically formulated for curly hair that will help enhance your curls without weighing them down. Ask your hair salon for their favourite recommendations. Apply the product to your hair while it’s still damp, and scrunch your curls gently from the ends up to help define them.
If you are a morning shower person, this only works in the morning, so keep that in mind! If you would like, you could do the same the night before, but the product may not be as effective come morning.
Use a diffuser
If you showered in the morning and need to dry your hair quickly before you are late to work, use a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer. A diffuser helps distribute the heat evenly among your hair, which can help prevent frizz and enhance your curls’ natural texture.
Hold the diffuser close to your scalp, and move it around circularly to help enhance your curls. Avoid using a regular hair dryer nozzle, which can create too much airflow and disrupt your curls’ natural pattern!
Pineapple your hair
We do not want you to apply the fruit to your hair. Pineapple your hair is a means of maintaining your curls during the night to ensure they look luscious in the morning. “Pineapple” your hair at night can help preserve your curls and prevent them from getting flattened or frizzy.
To pineapple, your hair, gather all of your hair on top of your head and secure it with a soft hair tie or scrunchie. Ensure the hair tie is loose enough to avoid a curl dent. In the morning, gently release your hair and shake it out to reveal your newly revived curls.
Avoid brushing or combing your hair
For some, brushing and combing their hair is a part of their daily routine. However, someone with curly hair may not know it is prone to frizz, so it is best to avoid brushing or combing it in the morning as this can increase frizz.
Instead, use your fingers to gently separate your curls and add volume. If you need to detangle any knots, use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush, start at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the roots.
